Welcome to the home site of Smart Alarm Clock application for Android phones.
This application tracks body movements and calculates the best time for staring alarm sound. Just put it somewhere on your bed: your phone's movements sensor (also known as accelerometer) is sensitive enough to work from any part of the bed.
Maybe don't like getting up in the morning, but with this application, at least you can!
Do you have any questions? Please feel free to comment!
How does it work?
It rings right after your last dream is over (you probably will remember it.)
This is the best time to wake up; that's why it can make your life better.
Here's how it looks based on user reviews:
Stage 5 of sleep, also known as REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, is marked by extensive physiological changes, such as accelerated respiration, increased brain activity, rapid eye movement, and muscle relaxation. People dream during REM sleep.
This is the best time to wake up; that's why it can make your life better.
Here's how it looks based on user reviews:
- You have a dream, as the last stage of your sleep cycle
- You realize that you are dreaming because it became odd or comes to the logical end
- To change the dream you decide to roll over
If nothing happens, then people completely forget about this and fall into a deep sleep shortly. But, here begins the magic!
- Right in that moment your favorite song starts to play somewhere far away, getting louder and louder
- You wake up in a cheerful mood, ready to start a perfect day!
Scientific explanation
A typical sleep cycle has five stages and takes 90-110 minutes. During Stage 1 of your sleep cycle, you sleep lightly. At Stage 2, your sleep gets progressively deeper. At Stages 3 and 4, also known as "Delta Sleep," you sleep most heavily; this is when your body rebuilds itself.Stage 5 of sleep, also known as REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, is marked by extensive physiological changes, such as accelerated respiration, increased brain activity, rapid eye movement, and muscle relaxation. People dream during REM sleep.
Who does need it?
Just anyone.
Anyone who wants to wake up alert and ready to start the day, such as frequent travelers across time zones, business people looking for an extra edge, students with fluctuating schedules... just anyone.
There is small amount of people who don't need an alarm clock to wake up on time, but if you aren't one of them, you'd probably need the best alarm clock to get up refreshed.

Hello
I've a big problem. I recieved your great application with ADC2 but, the same day, i did something stupid! I've upgraded the ROM of my HTC and - surprise - I lost Intelligent Smart Alarm Clock!
I'm very interesting to test this application and don't find it in the Market. Is it a way to download the application?
Thanks et good luck for the challenge!
I rated the app, and it uninstalled. Please make it availaible for download
Hello PN, Jan,
You can now download bugfixed version from the front page.
Thank you for your votes!
I'ts outstanding. Thanks a lot :)
I woke up like a babie (if thats possible)
It only seems to record movement if the screen is on... This won't suffice because the smallest amount of light keeps me up.
Any ideas? Am I doing something wrong?
Martijn,
The only version is now on Market; this website just points to that specific Market application.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work on Hero, Hero200 and Eris due to firmware bug. But latest version at least shows you this warning.
If there's no warning, then everything should be okay. Movements history in the main screen is cleared once the screen goes off.
Can u attach the phone to your body and have the app function? I am concerned about knocking my phone off of the bed, or getting it under a pillow and not hearing it go off.
So far it hasn't gone off prior to my established alarm, which either means I awake at the perfect time, or the app can't detect movement on my bed
Yes, im afraid of my phone either... because it can
easly fall down.
I'm appreciating your work, it's a great app!
But I have experienced a big problem on my T-mobile Pulse device, so your app doesn't work correctly on that.
If I turn off the screen or set to turn off automatically, then after starting the recording Smart Alarm won't record anything while the screen is off.
But if I leave the screen on, then after 2 hours the battery runs down (from ~50%), and there will be a corrupt log (max activity all the time) and I will sleep more, because don't alert me.
Please try to correct this problem, because this device is very popular and widespread in Europe. If you need, I can help you testing ;)
Thank you very much!
Zsolt
This app is a great idea! I really do feel refreshed when I wake up =o) Another thing I like is the alert when its time to go to bed. I know what time I should be going to bed but sometimes I have a hard time getting there so the reminder helps.
Thank you so muuch!
Why does this app not works on an Hero?
Awesome, this seems to work, I wake up! And that is not little said.
Thanks for a great app. This is the kind of apps I happily support. How to do that?
/Johan
I love this app, but when the alarm goes off, I can't turn it off unless I have had the screen turned on all night (which sucks, phone's getting pretty hot).
I have an HTC Magic with custom ROM (1.5 firmware)
Is there any sight yet on the version thats also working with droid and hero?
Hello,
I'm sorry for not publishing update yet - I've just moved from Russia to Zurich, Switzerland, so I spend a lot of time on other things =(
I'm sure to release an update on this weekend.
I can imagine imagine that you need your time for other things to be done. So take yor time.
i was highly sceptical and then greatly surprised that this worked.
i have only one "problem":
When the alarm sounded I couldn't turn it off and the app had to be forced close to finally stop sounding - is it my phone (G1) or is it the app?
apart from that: kudos and thanks for making the app
@finnporter
Like I said, I have the same problem on my HTC Magic.
This seems to be a very promising app! I installed it on my HERO to se what it looked like.
I'm checking this site regularily for uppdates, I'm a hard sleeper in desperat need for this kind of app. Jeep up the good work!

It can be a killer app, if you take time for it!
i can't stop alarm on my htc magic too :(
but it's really a great app.
is there a way to export graph ?
is it possiblt to see "normal sleeper" graph ?
i had an awful night and wake me up at the last time, it didn't find a good moment to wake me up :(
Well,
What format would you like to export? Is there any industry standard format?.. CVS? Excel?
Movements data is stored on SD in binary format right now.
'Normal sleeper'? Great idea...
In general it has big spikes every 90 minutes and smaller ones 10-15-20 minutes before big.
I could try to publish it.
well, any format... i'll make a graph with it. CSV is easier to create for you i mean.
Hi there,
I'm enjoying the app very much (although I'm using a Nexus One so I've had to keep the screen on all night to get it to work properly because of that active bug with the accelerometer when the screen is inactive).
I do have one question though. When I sleep I usually leave the door to my bedroom open for my cats. My question is, would their movements be enough to trip the alarm to go off in the morning? I'd imagine that they probably could, but I wanted to verify with you. I'll have to try an experiment and lock them out for a night or two to see the difference.
Also, I wanted to ask if you had heard of the aXbo alarm clock. I read about it several years ago and it really intrigued me. It sounds like it's doing something similar but uses a wrist band to track the sleeper's heart rate. Here's a link to it:
http://www.axbo.com/axbo/CMS/CMS.aspx?Language=E
Thank you very much!
Greg
Greg, thanks for sharing your experience!
Well, probably yes.
Current implementation tries to analyze and predict sleep phases, but if it fails to do so it just reverts back to simple idea to ring when rather strong movement is just deteceted.
If you could put it under the pillow or somewhere, where cats are unlikely to walk, it will be okay.
Probably, I should create sensitivity calibration for such cases...
Recently a Sense UI firmware upgrade came out for the HTC Magic. I've read that it basically makes your phone into a Hero, so I was wondering if you've received reports of whether the application stops working correctly or not when used on an updated Magic.
Is there any way of downloading this for the Tattoo? I can't find it in Market.
This is a terribly stupid question, but what does the "history" mean? I don't understand the blue lines. And FANTASTIC application!!!
Curious little app. I have the worse time going to sleep, staying asleep, and generally feeling good in the morning. Since the app is based on movement, I don't think it will work me unfortunately as I sleep on a tempapedic form bed. Anyone have any luck with this app on foam beds?
Foam beds?
I'm sure it will work.
Accelerometer is _really_ sensitive.
Just give a try - if your phone is supported, you will see the results on a graph.
Nearest version will have Testing screen to get results quickly.
Hi, this application is not in Android Market for HTC Tattoo, do you know why is that?
Sorry, I found the answer to my last comment. I have an HTC Tattoo and your application doesn't appear in Android Market, that is because, as I found out in google "the Market will not list any Android app that doesn’t expressly state in its manifest that the app will display and function correctly on a QVGA resolution."
This is a pity, because I have installed many application without QVGA resolution and they work fine anyway, so is there any chance that you could just update the manifest?
There is more info about how can you solve this problem here: http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2009/10/support-for-additional-screen.html
Manuel, thanks for your comment!
Unfortuntately, Tattoo has a firmware bug that affect this kind of application: http://www.smart-alarm-clock.com/supported-phones
That's why I didn't list app for small-screen devices, at least until they will fix that.
Hi,
but http://www.smart-alarm-clock.com/supported-phones says it will work on the Tattoo if it's on charger. Please let us test it... :-)
Download is not available :( kosiakk. Is it possible for me to get it? been looking for a way to download it for about 6 hours now, but cant find anything.. :(
Best regards Morten
Guys, sorry, it's really buggy now. Please give me one day more to fix it
Hi! Nice app. Will tehre be a possibility to see/analyse sleeping patterns online? I would very much like to compare my own different patterns. Or even compare patterns with other users!
Hi,
First of all, I wanted to submit feedback and suggestions for the app, but couldn't find any e-mail address on your website, so I decided to post it here.
I was finally able to try the application with my HTC Tattoo, since you didn't update it to be able on Android Market for QVGA phones I had to get it with my emulator. The UI works perfect on Tattoo's screen, so if I were you I would just update the manifest saying it's compatible with this kind of screens.
I tested it last night with the charger on and I have to say that it worked perfectly, the only problem being that in the morning the phone was really hot, I'm worried that it might be a problem in long term. Tonight I'm going to try it leaving the screen locked with an application like 'Screen on', and without the charger. Has anyone tried it like this?
I was very interested in using this app in particular because I have a lot of trouble sleeping, and I thought it may help me figure out if changing bed, pillow, switching rooms, etc... my sleep would be better. So I'm more interested in the 'tracking history' than in the alarm clock itself, to be honest. The only problem with this is that I'm not really sure how to interpret the graph, does it represent the movement in my sleep or the depth of the sleep?
Also, I agree with the last comment, I think your next update should be some way of saving the history into a website, or even simpler, being able to save the graphs into a JPG image or Excel graph to compare different days. It should be simple, isn't it? (I don't know much about it..).
Keep up with the great job! I assure you as soon as Google fixes the damn bug I will purchase the paid version ;)
Greetings!
Hi,
An update coming soon? Meanwhile would it be possible to put an old version 1.6.x for download as the latest updates are WAY too sensitive for Milestone (just constant blue bar)
Hi again, continuing with what I said last night, leaving the HTC Tattoo tracking with the screen locked using and application like "Screen On" works, but it takes approximately 60% of the battery during the night, and the phone warms up more or less the same as it does while charging.
Hello,
I've got an HTC Tattoo too, and i can't find an apk to run this software. I really want to test it (i know limitations on this phone)!
Manuel, is it possible to release your apk version?
Or for developper, can you compile it for QVGA resolution?
Thanks!
nicolas, application should be available from Android Market - it was compiled with support for small screens.
Can you see it in the search results?
kosiakk, I tried searching for the app in the Market, but couldn't find it using the Barcode Scanner. Looking for the term "Smart Alarm" I found 2, but I doubt any of them is yours: "Smart Alarm (Sleep Cycle) 2.1.4" (372 kbs), and "Smart Alarm Lite 1.0" (130 kbs); both of them by Kyoto Applications.
Nicolas, I'd be happy to send you the .apk if the developer agrees. Leave me your email address or something
The app isn't working anymore for me after the last update.
Is it possible to go the previous version?
Where can I find it?
Best app ever, btw!!! Would love to pay for it, but paid apps aren't available yet in Belgium...
*I WOULD LOVE TO BE ABLE TO EXPORT MY SLEEP DATA!!
I used this app on my Verizon HTC Eris to to track my sleep last night. In application settings, I told the phone to keep the display backlight always on when connected by USB. I set the phone on the corner of my bed and it worked fine.
I had a full graph in the morning.. I noticed that my sleep cycles seemed short.. I have a spike every hour. or maybe I'm not getting any deep sleep.
I understand that there is no initial calibration period?
The shake-to-trigger voice memo feature is excellent! Very glad that you included it.
I haven't seen this question asked before, but maybe I just missed it somewhere...
I assume that the app really isn't useful if you sleep with a spouse?
I recently purchased the Motorola Droid 855. I miss the ability to have various tones and classical music alerts in the calander function, which I also use to wake-up feature as needed. This sleep monitor alarm interests me. How do I get these different apps?
This is brilliant!
Perfect morning starting at 5:32am. I will continue to test for a few more days but I would definitely pay for this application. Clearly the best sleep-cycle based alarm on the Android market place at the moment.
Keep up the good work and the sooner the better for more updates. I look forward to buying the extended edition.
eeg this phone deosnt have, so how can it work, it can not, so if i move in my sleep what it will wake me, what if im just getting comforable, doesnt make sense, i call fake
o i get it, you have to "review" all the comments so no negative ones will ever make it, well played sir
Do you often find things not making sense, Anonymous?
Learn to read, learn to write, then come back and things will be a lot clearer.
Is it possible to do similar detection via microphone?
Accelerometer can detect movement, movement also cause sound.
Hi!
This seems like a great app but I can't get it to work at all with Hero eventhough I've enabled the work-around (screen not going black while plugged).
Any ETA when it will work with Hero? I don't mind the screen being on as long as the program works.
Great app but you absolutly need to fix the the problem with the screen with the N1! :D
Hi, awesome app I really love the idea. One problem though I have tried it for 2 nights now and every morning the app crashes as soon as I touch the sceen (i can choose wait or close, but waiting will only pop the crash menu again)
It did however save my data the entire night, but unfortunalte I woke up before the alarm went off so far :p out of fear that it didnt went off.
Im using a G1 by the way
Thanks for a great app.
I just don't know how to read graphs it generaves.
Please tell me about it, thanks.
Posting from Japan.
The Nexus One sensor bug has been fixed in the latest Android release (Froyo). When can we expect an update that takes advantage of this?
Started using it last night for my Hero, with the Cronos Droid ROM, seems to work just fine with the workaround.
Any chance I could get involved in the project? Maybe fixing bugs, adding info to the web page etc...
Seems to work great. I grabbed the .data file but wasn't sure how to read it correctly. I would like to convert it into something I can plot in Excel. Any suggestions?
please update your app, so it will work on the legend too!
it's not recording anything...
it's just working with the g sensor, isn't it? cause my bed is very hard and it seems like the phone can't detect my movements :/
Love the app! I'm a computer programmer with some experience with Android dev... let me know if you'd like some help with the app!
Hello, your app is great!
Is there a way to read it OO calc? It would be nice to analyce my sleep behaviour.
Not to burst anyone's bubble, but I worked in sleep research for several years and this isn't how it works.
The stages of sleep aren't sequential from 1-5. We achieve REM for the first time approximately 90 minutes after you fall asleep. The most vivid dreams are during REM but we dream throughout the night. During a normal restful 8 hour night your last stage is usually stage 1.
If you want to wake up refreshed sleep eight hours a night on a regular schedule.
I only have one ringtone in my list on my Galaxy S. Is there a way to change it to one of the system ringtones or do I have to download another app (Rings Extended)?
I've been thinking about this idea for a while and now I found out that you made such an app. That's really great!
I like the interface and the number of settings you can play with. And most of all.. I like that it actually works :)
I was thinking about possible future features. The app now predicts when you're dreaming at the end of your night. I imagine that it should also be possible to estimate dream periods during the whole night and alert you (subtle) about it. This would be a great feature to induce Lucid Dreaming (dream in which you are aware that you are dreaming).
Just some thoughts.. hope you appreciate it :)
I have a Galaxy Spica Android 2.1 phone.
In the history of Smart Alarm Clock I only see blue, there are no spikes...
I LOVE this alarm. I wake up feeling rested more than I ever have before. Tracking does not show in the history when the screen goes off but the alarm still seems to be tracking movements. I have Samsung Fascinate phone. I bought the donation version to say thanks for the great nights sleep I am getting. Maybe it will help them keep up with the new phones. If not it says thanks for what I am getting now!
Any plans to finish this app? I was just about to buy the paid version not realizing that this hasn't been updated since April. I'll pay, but only when I feel assured that there will be continued work and support on this.
I can't find the app in the Market on my HTC Wildfire.
Will this work for two people sharing a bed? My wife wakes up much easier than I do and I'd like to use this to wake us up when it's just right for me.
Thanks for making my morning a little bit better with this great article!!
I would lile to start tracking without enabling the alarm in some cases, just for getting an idea of the movements during the night. Not for waking me up. Do I need another app? It seems a natural feature for this app. Am I missing something?
Project seems dead!?
Motorola Defy+ with Android 2.3.4 seems to not allow access to sensor data when screen is off (sleep/standby)..
Cool! I want it install on my Android phone. Gonna search for it now and hope it will be compatible w/ my Ginger bread x)
