Thanks to everybody who voted for this app!
Unfortunately, ADC2 Grand-Prize goes to SweetDreams. It does basically the same things but without of alarm clock =)
Well, now I definetely know: design will save the world.
Please download updated version from Market for free.

Well, I like the app, but it did not work that well. I wasn't able to turn the alarm off for a while and by the time I made it, I was finally awake - I hope that this isn't the trick behind the app ;)
Anyway, I was hoping to see a version of the app in the Android Market which would be maybe more advanced as the one on the ADC - when will there be one available?
Thank you for the feedback!
No, there's no such trick there =) just press hardware back button to turn it off.
Currently we are working on new, revolutionary UI, which is much easy-to-use than current version.
Algorythm is already updated, so, I hope, next weekend app will be published here. Not on market yet, because we have the only chance to win... it should be almost perfect =)
Some other apps on the Market forces you to solve puzzles to turn the alam off.
I think it's a torture to use those apps. Yes, you will wake up, but will it help you to feel refreshed and well-rested? Actually, people feel angry - it's not the best idea for the morning.
So, we don't use this kind of tricks. It's just a design bug that there's no on-screen button to dismiss the alarm.
Waiting for Google to send me this application for review! I'm going to put 5 stars at least for the idea and the indispensability!
This application can be downloaded outside ADC at http://code.google.com/p/smart-alarm-clock/downloads/detail?name=SmartAlarmClock-1.0.apk . I used it every night -- quite convenient. Gotta be careful to respect the interface, though. I enabled airplane mode at night, then woke up before the alarm went off and turned it off via the phone's old interface, and airplane mode kept toggling for the rest of the day. I had to uninstall the app and reinstall it to get my phone to work again.
Karl, thanks for the bug report!
Just for such cases I created 'Emergency Stop' button: go to Preferences window and push Menu button. It should stop this kind of bugs with Airplane mode.
You've found my 'secret' upload site for beta-testers =) Yes, it contains exact copy of ADC2 submission.
I'm afraid emergency stop didn't help - the process boots itself back up again and resumes constantly toggling airplane mode 0.o
Are you considering making this project open source for others to examine bugs? I am continually considering uninstalling it for good, but it's just so freakin' indispensable ;-)
You could just disable Airplane mode in application pererences - it should not make any problems after that (works for me).
Currently I'm working on a next version. It is much better and much easier to use. Currently I have no plans on opensourceing it, but results of ADC might change that =)
I was just one of your ADC reviewers and I'm surprised at the originality of this concept and think it is a fantastic idea. Gave you 5 stars for Originality and Effective Use and Polish/Appeal, and a 4 on Indispensability solely because an alarm clock with a 30 minute window means some days I'll have up to 30 minutes to do nothing in the morning.
I'd love to see the concept expanded to provide more details about my sleep patterns. The details list didn't ever populate with anything so I'm not sure what you're going to put there, but being able to drill down into each night and see where I was active or at least when the alarm would have been triggered if inside the 30 minute window would be useful. It would also serve to provide evidence sleep works in cycles for users who might otherwise be skeptical of the concept. Maybe even have an alarm-free mode, where you just record 8 hours before an inactive alarm.
Anyway, great idea and by far the highest rating I've given to any ADC2 submission. I look forward to seeing a finished version!
I would like zu get a free copy when ready. I realy like your idea much. I test it on adc2
I tried to use yourf app with my moto cliq. But when trying to set my alarm time it errored on opening the android alarm clock. Maybe moto customized something? Let me know if there is any debugging I can help you with. App sounds very cool and I can't wait to try it. Thanks
Loved this app, I actually did wake up feeling refreshed. Hope you win.
Bryan, thanks for sharing your great ideas! Some things are really on the way =)
Everybody can now download updated version 1.1. It is mostly bugfix with almost no new features.
So you could test it better during the real night.
Excellent app idea. I've rated this very highly on ADC. Will you be making this free when it is released? I'd happily pay for a donate version, but I don't like seeing such important apps being paid only
Alex, I agree with you - it has to be free.
I'm going to release more feature-rich version with outstanding UI as paid app, but base version (sufficent to make people's life better) should be free.
finally found it..I loved that app on ADC. Will try on longer run and report back...if it really do what's supposed to, it's worth few bucks.
Awesome app with a very original idea! gave this app 5 stars for originality and indispensability. Looking forward to more updates!
I am quite impressed by the concept, but i've used your alarm this night and i have some questions.
1. even though you said somewhere that this is just a false report, the acc-meter really doesn't seem to work when my screen is turned off. I tried this before going to sleep: i turned off the screen, waited a few second, shook the phone some time, and then turned on the screen again. Unfortunately, no movement was indicated on the movement bar at the bottom. Also, this morning i checked the history, and all those bars were completely movement free (except for the first minutes when i was testing the acc-meter)
My question is: is this a bug, or did i do something wrong? I have a magic with cyanogen 4.2.5.
2. battery usage: if this app monitors my sleep 8 hrs long, doesnt that drain the battery very fast? I connected my charger this time, but i rather not do that again, chances i wreck my charger in my sleep (by lying on the cord) are pretty big..
Wouldnt it be better to start monitoring 30mins before wake up time?
I hope these arent stupid questions but i have thoroughly searched this website and couldnt find any answers.
Cheers,
Stéphan
Stéphan, thanks for your feedback!
- Movement bar at the bottom is there just for your visual pleasure =) It stops working when activity is paused. actual movements tracker writes only to the file on SD.
- Bars in the history screen contain 9 hours, so if you just test it for few minutes, only one first pixel will be used.
If history is empty in the morning, then the problem really exists =( I hope it was only Hero with such firmware bug.
- Battery use is not so high. Original ADC2 version had that option (collect only last 30 minutes), but after some improvements (version 1.1 flushes history file only once per hour) battery consumption is really low.
CPU lock is held during all the night, but accelerometer works on lowest possible frequency.
Could you please wirite me a email (with your address ) to a@kosenkov.com so we could investigate tracking issue on Magic.
Does this work with the HTC Tattoo and its puny little low resolution screen?
I haven't tested it on real hardware, but layout is flexible everywhere - it should be working fine.
Please let me know if you could test it.
I tried to install the bugfix version but it crashed at launch
No wait I tell a lie, just tried it and it seems to run smoothly, thanks!
Opspin, it's a bug in Market application, actually =)
For some reason it cannot decide which main activity (application has two) to start and just fails.
I will try to create an workaround.
Thanks for this app! Its way better than Sweet Dreams. I don't know what people are thinking. I sent a link to this app to all my friends that have an Android phone.
