While users of G1, Magic and other great Android phones are really happy to use this application (and voting 5 stars on Market!), other people with HTC Hero cannot use this application at all!
This kind of applications can not be run on those devices because of kown firmware bug 3708: phone's accelerometer is not working while screen is off.
That's why Smart Alarm Clock cannot track your sleep cycles and works just as an old, ordinary alarm clock.
Please, help us to solve this issue!
- Open the page with the bug and login with your Google account
- Click on the star near the title
If many people vote for that, Google will spend more effort sloving the issue (but please don't leave "+1" comments because it spams others.)
Let us together make Android a little better!
Thank you for understanding

I've found a workaround for this on the Hero! You can go into settings, application settings, hit debug options and there's an option which prevents the screen from sleeping when the USB cable is attached.
As the Hero is a phone that can't go with a charge every night, most people will have their USB cable on while asleep.
When using this, the software just continues monitoring. The downside is that your screen is on, unfortunately. I've found that when you lay the phone upside down and right next to your pilow, you don't even see the light from the screen as it does dim a fair bit.
Not ideal, but it works :) Also, I hooked up the external speakers in my room so I can hear it go off even when it happens to end up straight under my pilow.
Furthermore, I would like to thank you for this software! You're a hero, waking up is so much more relaxing now! I got up today with it and I was ready to go straight away, whereas normally I am the kind of person that needs a post-sleep period of at least 3 hours to really wake up. Can you make an APK available via Paypal? I'll gladly pay for it but I don't have a credit card.
Martijn, that's amazing!
Thank you for sharing this hint.
While HTC doesn't comment this (please write to HTC support - you are the customers!), I'm woking on workarund for the problem.
Application will try to turn the screen on (dimmed) for at least last 30 minutes to catch up the movements
I have the new Nexus One and it has the same issue. Also, the "end call" button is only available on-screen while making phone calls, so the built-in test has no way of forcing screen sleep.
Hey Kosenkov - what happened to the re-register sensor after screen sleep-thing? Didn't work?
@Oscar: I only intended to work for Motorola phones (and it seems working).
Unforutnately, Nexus One was developed by HTC, so you'd like to star the issue so they will fix that problem.
The only workaround is to keep screen on all the night (while charging).
@Bekah: that was only an idea =) well, I'm trying to upload it now. Stay tuned!
Hi,
I have tried letting the phone on, and it appears that hte application is not working correctly.
If I look to the history of the night, it remains at maximum activity whole night, like If I did not sleep at all and continuously moving.
I forgot to add I have a htc hero G2
I have the same problem as fff, also with the Hero. I left it on my nightstand instead of my bed last night to see if it made a difference, but the activity was still at maximum all night. It looks like it drops back to zero maybe 15-30 minutes or so before the red line that I'm assuming is when the alarm went off. Only one out of six times does it appear that it worked correctly, and even then it's at maximum for about two hours, and I know it didn't take me that long to fall asleep, and then there's no activity after that until when the alarm went off. It's unlikely I didn't move at all for over 5 hours. Any ideas what's going on here?
Been looking for a place to download it for about 8 hours now. cant find it :( ill pay for it... kosniakk? can you help me?
i'm using the app on my nexus one. do i still need to keep the screen active for the app to work correctly?
if so, how do you prevent the screen from shutting off?
"This phone cannot record movements while the screen is off" in my G1 cyanogenmod 4.2.14.1
I have HTC Hero and it works, I use an app called Toggle Settings or something similar and there I can toggle to Screen never timeout. I just turn the phone upside down so not to be disturbed by the light.
My diagram never goes to zero but has definitive "spikes" and "valleys"...
I sent a message to HTC kindly asking them to look into this bug. Received a swift reply, but unfortunately there wasn't anything substantial in the response:
"In regard to your HTC Desire with a app not working correctly. Well, as for now there is no fix available for this fix right now. Nevertheless, we are working very hard to improve the software making it more compatible."
So I pressed a little harder in my follow-up and pointed out it's not the app, it's the firmware.
Hope to see this bug resolved (*800 can't be wrong)!
Thanks again for a great app!
Not work on my motorola milestone
with 2.1 update1.
Wake up on last interval time, in history always shown 100% activity.
Acceleration sensor is ok, Asphalt5 work perfectly :-)

Desire 2.2 not working when screen is off. Great idea, I will reinstall this app if it works. Can't use it this way :(
Any idea on what the latest is with this bug, issue 3708? Has it been repaired?
I'm trying to use Tasker to keep my HTC Desire awake throught the night, with screen dimmed right down, sound levels off and battery-munching apps like WiFi/Auto-sync
/email etc turned off. If you are like me and aren't too keen on having the USB cable in your bed and need a longer cable just to reach your bed anyway, hopefully I can get this to work and I can share it.
I managed to get Tasker working so that you don't need the USB plugged in all night. However, I'm still working on it as it used approximately 60% battery over 6hrs 17mins sleep time.
Here are some detailed stats on what I have found out so far using the Tasker app. I discovered how to keep the screen awake but it cannot be locked, which is not ideal.
After a little bit more play around I found out that the screen could be locked and tested again.
Here are the results, battery status checked using the standard Android tools. The Smart Alarm Clock was started after the battery was charged to 100%:
TEST 1:
Screen on all night, unlocked
6hrs 17mins sleep time
Total battery usage = 60%
Battery usage:
Android system = 70%
Display = 16%
Cell standby = 14%
TEST 2:
Screen on all night, unlocked
7hrs 14mins sleep time
Total battery usage = 80%
Battery usage:
Android system = 66%
Display = 20%
Cell standby = 14%
TEST 3:
Screen on all night, unlocked
6hrs 28mins sleep time
Total battery usage = 50%
Battery usage:
Android system = 65%
Display = 22%
Cell standby = 13%
This is the test with the screen locked.
TEST 4:
Screen on all night, locked
6hrs 22mins sleep time
Total battery usage = 60%
Battery usage:
Display = 44%
Cell standby = 42%
Android system = 10%
Android OS = 2%
Phone idle = 2%
It must be noted that on this final test, the resulting dream data recorded was very inaccurate. It looked like I had been constantly moving all through the night, whereas with the other tests there were periods of very little movement as expected.
It is also interesting to see how much the battery consumption has shifted on the final test.
Could the developer please give some insight as to where the status with the bug 3708 is? Also, in the developers opinion, are the figures I've recorded for battery usage of any use - are they representative of how much the phone works during data collection?
I look forward to hearing from you!
I note the Android bug 3708 is market closed and released ... a friend at Google points out that in this state, the googlers probably don't see any of the followon comments to that bug, they are filtered out.
I suspect the right thing to do is to create a new bug, add a comment in the old to point to the new, and repoint your blog to the new bug as well. I'm guessing a dev should be the best person to do this, us users can chime in later top help motivate.
